VimpelCom uses Alcatel-Lucent solution to launch femtocell-based services in the North-Western region of Russia

(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) St. Petersburg, -- OJSC VimpelCom announced the choiceof Alcatel-Lucent's (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) technical solution tosupport the launch of new services for Beeline subscribers in the North-Westernregion of Russia based on femtocell technology. This solution extendsVimpelCom's 3G network coverage and capacity into buildings, office blocks andat high-traffic locations where signals provided by the nearest base stationtend to be insufficient.

Femtocells or small cells act as dedicated base stations that enhance mobilebroadband coverage in specific hard-to-reach places. At present, theservice is available to VimpelCom's enterprise customers (under the BeelineBusiness brand) in St. Petersburg. By the end of September 2011, it will becomeavailable to Business-to-Business (B2B) customers of other branches of thecompany in the North-Western region.

Under the agreement Alcatel-Lucent has provided VimpelCom with itsend-to-end Femto-technology based 9360 Small Cell solution, including the 9361Home Cell, the 9362 Enterprise Cell, the 9364 Metro Cell for outdoorenvironments and the 9366 Small Cell Gateway. The solution includes a networkmanagement system which combines Alcatel-Lucent's Wireless Management System,Wireless Provisioning System and the Home Device Manager from its MotiveProduct Division. Alcatel-Lucent is providing full deployment and integrationservices along with design, installation and commissioning, softwareintegration and project management.

The next step in this cooperation between VimpelCom and Alcatel-Lucent inRussia's North-West will be the extension of the service to individual users onthe same hardware platform.
