Uzbekistan opens plant on production of digital TV tuners

Aug 31, 2010 (Trend News Agency - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The Uzbekistan-Singapore JV Telecom Innovations commissioned new plant on production of digital television tuners (set-top-box) started its operation in Free Industrial and Economic Zone (FIEZ) Navoi, the JSC Uzbektelecom said.

Servetechno PTE LTD (Singapore), Uzbektelecom joint stock company and Telmax Elektroniks LTD (both Uzbekistan) adopted decision to create enterprise on assembly of digital television tuners at FIEZ Navoi to satisfy needs of population for tuners. The sides registered joint venture in form of limited liability company Telecom Innovations in February 2010.

The plant with a design capacity of up to 100,000 digital set-top boxes costs $4.25. The project was financed at the expense of the Uzbek founders.

As previously reported, Telemax Electronics (96 per cent of the shares owned Uzbektelecom) started a pilot production of STBs for receiving signals for digital terrestrial television in the DVB-T format in Tashkent in 2009.

The capacity of the enterprise is over 50,000 tuners per year.

Uzbekistan implements a program on transition to digital broadcasting in 2008-2015.

The Uzbek State Unitary Enterprise "Center of radio communication, radio broadcasting and television" continues to introduce terrestrial digital TV broadcasting in Uzbekistan in standard of DVB-T. The organization plans to install additional three digital TV transmitters in Tashkent city in 2010. It is also planned to expand digital broadcasting through introducing and launching pilot digital broadcasting transmitters in Samarkand, Andijan, Kashkadarya regions and Karakalpakstan.

Uzbekistan has begun introducing terrestrial digital TV broadcasting in 2008 through launching pilot areas in Tashkent and Bukhara cities. Japan's NEC and Germany's Rohde & Schwarz supplied equipment to the zone.

Uzbektelecom is the national telecommunications operator in Uzbekistan. The company is the dominant provider of local and international fixed-line telephony. Its share in the telecommunications market is 98 and 96 percent respectively.
