Stennis Hosts 'Call of Duty' Game Developers

Mar 23, 2010 (DEFENSE DEPARTMENT DOCUMENTS AND PUBLICATIONS/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- SAN DIEGO (NNS) -- USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) hosted Infinity Ward game developers and representatives of Activision's Call of Duty Endowment (CODE) aboard ship March 15-16.

The developers and representatives interacted with Sailors while showcasing "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2." "It's an opportunity to play the game enhanced with the large screens and a good chance to talk to the guys who created a game with the magnitude of 'Call of Duty,'" said Chris Cation, Stennis' Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department head.

Stennis' MWR department set up three large projector display screens and four televisions with Microsoft XBOX 360 consoles in the ships hangar bay for Sailors to play the game alongside its developers and special guest Rob Corddry.

"I think it's great for them to come on board. There's not a lot we can do at sea, so them coming here really boosts morale," said Personnel Specialist Seaman Christopher Norris.

Corddry, a former "The Daily Show" cast-member, was aboard Stennis on behalf of CODE to interact with Sailors as they played the game.

"The Call of Duty Endowment is giving the Navy $180,000 worth of video games," said Corddry. "They're giving the Navy fun. Who loves fun? Sailors." The endowment donation provides "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" games and gaming equipment to Commander, Navy Installation Command's (CNIC) MWR for use in recreation centers fleetwide. From the contribution, Stennis' MWR received 50 copies of the game and four 32-inch TVs.

CODE was launched in October 2009 as a non-profit corporation to help service members' transition to civilian careers. CODE focuses its resources to support organizations that help former service members find jobs, obtain additional training and educate companies about the benefit of hiring veterans.

"It's a phenomenal thing that they are taking money out of the sale of this game, which is derived from the popularity of the military forces, and returning some of that back to veteran organizations," said Capt. Joseph Kuzmick, Stennis' commanding officer.
