OPINION: 'Taste of Cape Ann' is newest step in our lifestyle spotlight

Mar 20, 2010 (Gloucester Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Do you like to cook? Do you like to be a little adventurous when it comes to eating -- whether dining in or out? Do you wonder what wines go best with the dinners you're preparing, or about to enjoy? Do you wonder what ingredients go into some of the specialties crafted by our local chefs, restaurateurs and brewmasters? You can find all of that and much more on our Taste of the Times page at http://food.gloucestertimes.com. This past Wednesday marked the debut of our new, full-fledged "food" section, also headed "Taste of the Times." And next Wednesday, all of this will come alive when we host "A Taste of Cape Ann," a special event showcasing more than a dozen local food and beverage vendors from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester.

The event will give visitors the chance to sample foods and beverages from many local restaurants and other food and beverage purveyors featured in the "Taste of the Times" videos. It will also include a live taping of the 100th "taste" video, featuring Lenny Linquata of The Gloucester House.

Admission is $10, with all proceeds going to The Open Door and Cape Ann Animal Aid.

The Taste of Cape Ann event is the latest step in our expanding food and wine coverage, which used to be just one facet of the Times' Wednesday "Living" pages.

The expansion began last year, with the debut of the Taste of the Times online page, coordinated and produced by local residents Joe Langhan and Gianni Gallo in cooperation with our own features page designer and Times' Web site coordinator Scott Pytlik. Joe is one of the founders of The Food Network; Gianni is a TV producer who heads Gloucester-based Gallo Productions and, among other things, delivers St. Peter's Fiesta coverage overseas to RAI, the Italian-language global cable channel.

As the videos have moved forward, Times food and wine columnists Cathy Huyghe and Heather Atwood have joined local restaurateurs, chefs and home cooks in making them. Then, there's the live Wednesday online local TV show "The Deadliest Batch," hosted by the folks at Cape Ann Brewery and broadcast over the Taste of the Times page at gloucestertimes.com each Wednesday at 12:30 p.m.

All of that, of course, is on top of the hundreds of recipes you can get through the Taste of the Times recipe catalogues. And all of the videos made to date can be accessed from the gloucestertimes.com home page, or directly through http://food.gloucestertimes.com.

Now, you may wonder: Live TV cooking shows? Recipe catalogues? Nearly 100 cooking videos? A live "Taste of Cape Ann" event? What does that have to do with a community newspaper. Why would your community's newspaper do that? Well, it has everything to do with role as a community newspaper. And it's very much a part of our commitment to not just provide day-to-day news coverage of Gloucester and our Cape Ann towns, but coverage spotlighting the lives and lifestyles of our Cape Ann people. That includes the many wonderful food, beverage and dining choices available throughout our area. And those choices cannot be showcased solely on a newspaper page.

So we're continuing to take new steps spotlighting the dining, food and beverage industry across Cape Ann, utilizing our online video capability to bring you the Taste of the Times cooking videos and the live, weekly "Deadliest Batch" interactive telecast.

All these presentations are aimed at delivering you fresh, new food, cooking and dining coverage. They offer advertisers many new means of reaching out to readers and viewers. And it presents it all with a very hefty Cape Ann flavor.

That, in my mind, is what a community newspaper -- and daily community information service -- is all about. As always, let me know what you think.

If you would like to attend "A Taste of Cape Ann," please RSVP to Lil Toohey at 978-946-2111. The event is Wednesday, March 24, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at Cruiseport Gloucester, with all proceeds going to The Open Door and Cape Ann Animal Aid. Tickets are $10 each.
