The Fayetteville Observer, N.C., Michael Futch column: Time-Warner moving workers into one building

Mar 09, 2010 (The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Time Warner Cable continues to streamline its Fayetteville operation.

Spokeswoman Andi Curtis said last week that the company is moving forward on a consolidation of its offices into one building. Employees who work out of the company's older building, at 5715 Raeford Road, are moving across the road into its newer office building.

The older building houses the Fayetteville bureau of Time Warner Cable News Channel 14. Boxes and technical equipment are also stored in the building.

"All will be moved over and consolidated" into the Time Warner building at 6202 Raeford Road, Curtis said.

The move won't be completed for a couple of months, she said.

"Consolidating buildings and putting people under one roof really creates efficiencies, and efficiency in helping serve our customers better," Curtis said.

In late January, the company said consolidation has cut about 100 jobs in Fayetteville. Time Warner Cable announced last summer that it was shifting about 80 jobs from its Fayetteville office to Raleigh and Wilmington.

Those positions were mostly in the dispatch and call-center departments, spokeswoman Melissa Buscher said at the time.

With those jobs being relocated, Time Warner Cable now employs 223 people in Fayetteville.

Despite the reduction in staff, the business remains one of the largest private employers in Cumberland County.

The company is losing 13,200 square feet of space with the latest move. The building that will eventually house the entire Fayetteville operation has 40,000 square feet of space, Curtis said.

The vacant building will be put on the market, she said.

Curtis said no jobs will be cut in the latest consolidation.

Fayetteville country music station WKML raised a station record $169,502 during its two-day Country Cares for St. Jude Kids radiothon, according to Mac Edwards.

Edwards manages the half-dozen Beasley Broadcast Group radio stations in Fayetteville.

The on-air fundraiser, which raises money for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn., was held Feb. 18 and 19. It marked WKML's 23rd year of supporting the families of St. Jude.

The amount donated bettered the station's previous high of $162,400, set three years ago.

To date, WKML has raised more than $2.3 million for St. Jude.
