WHAT: Conference Call previewing the White House Forum on Modernizing Government WHEN: Thursday, January 14, at 10:45 a.m. ET ## * Streamlining Government Operations - The forum will include two break-out sessions on using technology to transform outdated processes. From just-in-time manufacturing to automation of paper processes to online customer ordering, the private sector has transformed business processes to radically reduce costs, increase quality, and cut delivery times for goods and services. The federal government can learn a great deal from the private sector's ability to scope and lead large-scale process and system improvements.

Moderators: Deputy Secretary of Defense William Lynn and Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs Scott Gould Print Pool coverage * Transforming Customer Service - The forum will include two break-out sessions on using technology to meaningfully improve customer service. From checking in to an airline flight online to using instant messaging to get technical support, companies are using technology to revolutionize customer service. But Americans do not often get this level of customer service and convenience from their government. The federal government must transform its customer services in ways similar to what has been done in the private sector, both in terms of improved monitoring and measuring customer satisfaction and also in terms of better delivery of citizen-facing services.

Moderators: Deputy Secretary of the Interior David Hayes and Deputy Secretary of Education Anthony Miller Print Pool coverage * Managing Technology Return on Investment - The forum will include a break-out session on managing the overall IT budget and portfolio. Chief executives must decide between competing priorities, define criteria for choosing projects, and identify ways to get more return from their overall technology spending during challenging economic times. Over the last decade, leading private sector firms have substantially improved their processes for managing their portfolio of IT projects. In order to improve its productivity, the federal government must learn from these experiences to better manage its IT project portfolio and budget and, therefore, realize a greater return from this investment.

Moderator: Deputy Secretary of State Jacob Lew Print Pool coverage 4:00PM CLOSING SESSION - Remarks and Discussion Led by Jeffrey Zients, Chief Performance Officer, with Aneesh Chopra, Chief Technology Officer, and Vivek Kundra, Chief Information Officer Concluding Remarks by Valerie Jarrett, Senior Adviser to the President Eisenhower Executive Office Building, South Court Auditorium Covered by OMB Pool ##
