MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS

Dec 23, 2009 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) -- Like many Tennessee families, our country continues to face difficult challenges. But the Christmas season provides a chance to reflect and give thanks for our families and friends, good health, freedom and the abilities we have to help others who may be in greater need than ourselves.

At this time of year, I'm reminded of the two lumberjacks competing to chop down their respective tree the fastest. They were both feverishly chopping away, and about halfway through, one of them walked away. After a while, he came back and resumed chopping, making such good progress that his tree came down first. In dismay, the lumberjack who had steadily chopped the whole time asked what the other one did that made him so quick upon his return. The reply was, "Sharpened my blade, of course." The holiday season provides an opportunity to spend time with family and friends that can help 'sharpen our blade' as we get ready for what next year will bring.

My family joins me in sending each of you our very best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season. May God be with us all in the year ahead.
