Lawyer 'conned' out of BD50,000 [Gulf Daily News, Manama, Bahrain]

(Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Nov. 26--A BAHRAINI has allegedly conned his lawyer out of BD50,000, five years after the same lawyer successfully defended him on money laundering charges.

The 34-year-old appeared before the Lower Criminal Court yesterday to plead not guilty to fraud and embezzlement.

He allegedly duped his lawyer into investing BD50,000 in a non-existent company, after convincing him he had established several businesses including a bank and a telecom firm.

The defendant promised his lawyer a five per cent stake in a ghost company called Batarco, which he allegedly claimed was a glass and aluminium factory, according to court documents.

His lawyer handed over the money believing the business was worth more than BD1 million, they added.

It is understood he paid the money in two instalments, first a cheque for BD45,000 followed by a second cheque for BD5,000.

However, after depositing the money he was allegedly told he owned just three per cent of the company in July 2007.

He only reported the matter to police a few months later, saying everything appeared above board when he met the defendant in his office.

"I visited him in his office in Seef and everything looked legitimate so I had no reason to doubt him," the 46-year-old lawyer told police.

"He told me that he had established several businesses including a bank, a telecommunications company and various factories, where he was the board of directors vice-president.

"When he spoke of the aluminium factory, all the details he provided were convincing.

"He initially told me that I would get five per cent of the company shares, but when I gave him the money and signed the contract I found out I only got three per cent.

"But after a few months I noticed something was dodgy and I then found out the company was fake." The court yesterday adjourned the trial until December 21 for review and to accept defence papers.
