Black journalists honor The Call

Nov 22, 2009 (The Kansas City Star - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The staff of The Call of Kansas City received the 2009 Media Public Service Award on Saturday from the Kansas City Association of Black Journalists.

In its 18th annual awards to recognize journalists who have excelled in covering diverse communities and issues in the area, the association chose The Call for its souvenir edition on the election of President Barack Obama.

Here are the other awards given: --KCABJ President's Award: Pamela Spencer, The Kansas City Star, for work with the KCABJ student academy and for helping judge the media awards.

--Newspapers (over 100,000) Spot News Enterprise Reporting: Robert A. Cronkleton, Glenn E. Rice and Monty A. Davis, The Star.

--Magazine Feature: Cindy Hoedel, The Star.

--Newspapers (over 100,000) Commentary: Barbara Shelly, The Star.

--Newspapers (over 100,000) Features: Steve Paul, The Star.

--Newspapers (over 100,000) Enterprise Reporting: Christine Vendel, Lee Hill Kavanaugh and Malcolm Garcia, The Star.

--Radio Magazine: Susan B. Wilson, Sylvia Maria Gross, Alex Smith and Annie Walsh, KCUR-FM.

--Radio Talk Show: Walt Bodine, Gina Kauffmann, Suzanne Hogan and Jamie Medlicott, KCUR-FM.

--Radio Feature: Laura Spencer, KCUR-FM.

--Television Sports Magazine: Urban America Outdoors.

Scholarships: --Lucile H. Bluford Scholarship: Cymonne Nicholle New, a junior at North Kansas City High School.

--Roy Wilkins Scholarship: Zachary McGowan, a senior at University Academy.

--Laura R. Hockaday Scholarship: Gabrielle Young, a sophomore at Oak Park High School.

--Nancy Diuguid Scholarship: Raymond Banks, a freshman at Missouri Valley College.
