San Jose Mercury News, Calif., Action Line column: Comcast, Charter hold customers hostage

Nov 06, 2009 (San Jose Mercury News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Q Vern really opened a can of worms (Action Line, Oct. 22). He should be ticked off. Those of us who have Charter Cable have been able to watch one Sharks game so far this season.

This does not affect a "few" fans. It affects hundreds of fans. Morgan Hill, Gilroy, Hollister, and parts of Reno to name a few. Charter says that Comcast wants too much money.

Comcast created a second channel and moved the Oakland A's and the San Jose Sharks games to that channel, therein lies the problem.

It shouldn't be our problem to seek out a communication company that carries our hockey games.

That is what we have Charter for.

Ron & Maureen McCabe Gilroy A Charter's Manny Martinez said that earlier this year, Comcast Sports moved Oakland A's, San Jose Sharks and other sports teams from CSN-BA over to Comcast Sports Net-California, CSN-CA, formerly known as Comcast Sports West, a channel Charter did not carry due to little interest from their customers, Martinez said.

"We would like to provide the A's and Sharks games -- games that were previously available to all of us on CSN-BA -- once again to our sports fans," said Martinez in an e-mail. "However, Comcast Sports wants CSN-CA distributed to all Charter customers on the Expanded Basic lineup. We would not be responsibly representing the best interests of all Charter customers in managing our costs if we accepted those terms. Since most of the Sharks games provided on CSN-CA were available to our customers last season, we would be willing to pay a nominal fee to Comcast Sports for CSN-CA rather than the significant cost per customer they are demanding.

"We will, however, continue to discuss an agreement with Comcast Sports."
