Glynn Academy senior brings home hardware

Oct 27, 2009 (The Brunswick News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Travis Williamson went into the final round of the Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Laurel Island Junior Shootout thinking an even par round would give him a shot to win. He did two strokes better.

Williamson won the boys age 16-19 division at the HJGT event, held this past weekend at Laurel Island Links in Kingsland. The Glynn Academy senior shot 4-under for the tournament -- 2-under in each round -- to win his third ever tournament.

"It felt pretty good (to win)," Williamson said. "I was hitting it really good so I thought I had a pretty good chance." Williamson came into Sunday's final round trailing Bryan Lloyd of Fernandina Beach, Fla., by two strokes. While Williamson played steady in the second round, Lloyd struggled, shooting a 3-over 75.

Williamson didn't know what Lloyd's score was as he played his round.

"I didn't have a clue," Williamson said. "I thought (not knowing) was easier because it kept my focus on the shot I was hitting and not what everybody else was doing. He's a really good player, and I knew I was going to have to play hard to beat him." Williamson led the tournament in birdies with 11 and dominated on the par-5s, where he turned in a stroke average of 4.5. It was his first time playing the course at Laurel Island.

Williamson's success did not shock John Allison, his golf coach at Glynn Academy.

"He's had a good summer," Allison said of Williams, a four-year letterman at Glynn.

"It doesn't surprise me he's done so well." Other Brunswick residents competing in the event included David Foulke (finished ninth in the boys 16-19 division), Richie Wiltfang (10th in the boys 16-19 division), and Caitlin Cole (17th in the girls 15-19 division).

Saint Simons Island residents participating included Glenn Jones (sixth in the boys 13-15 division), Will Johnson (10th in the boys 13-15 division), Taylor Mays (11th in the boys 13-15 division), Lawrence Desola (12th in the boys 13-15 division) and Katy Harris (ninth in the girls 15-19 division).
