Columbitech Develops FIPS-Certified Mobility Solution for Public Safety Agencies

Jul 08, 2009 (Close-Up Media via COMTEX) -- Columbitech announced the release of a FIPS 140-2 certified Mobile VPN with security and session persistence for public safety agencies and other emergency service departments.

Columbitech noted that its software-based mobility solution is the only offering to complete testing from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to receive the military-grade FIPS 140-2 certification. Based on the Transport Layer Protocol (TLS) standard, the Mobile VPN offers multifactor authentication and encryption to ensure transmitted data remains secure.

For public safety professionals working in the field, the solution's session persistence enables persistent wireless access to all office applications, including emergency dispatch, fire inspection data, police reports, vehicle and identity checkups and other records management systems. Even in areas with poor cellular coverage, the Mobile VPN resumes the session as the device roams between networks - allowing users to seamlessly continue working without disconnecting or repeating the log-in process. By ensuring uninterrupted remote access, workers can complete more tasks in the field - eliminating the need for additional paperwork back in the office.

"We've seen many departments struggle with mobility capabilities for their field workers - often feeling forced into inefficient solutions to meet the strict security standards set for government and public safety agencies," said Asa Holmstrom, president of Columbitech. "With a combination of security like FIPS 140-2 certification and mobility features, our Mobile VPN is ideal for any public safety agency looking to increase productivity - within a secure remote environment." As a software and application transparent solution, the Columbitech solution needs no additional hardware. Deployed with existing servers and devices, the network-agnostic Mobile VPN also offers low maintenance costs and allows agencies to only pay for the number of users required, the company noted in a release.
