One critical after SUV rams sedan

ZIONSVILLE, Jun 27, 2009 (The Lebanon Reporter - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- A Maryland man was critically injured Friday afternoon when his Ford Taurus sedan was hit broadside by an SUV in the 3800 block of U.S. 421.

Robert McGovern, whose 48th birthday was June 19, was taken to Methodist Hospital with head, rib, pelvis, hip and internal injuries after the 2:34 p.m. crash, said Boone County Sheriff Office Deputy Chris Burcham.

Preliminary reports indicated that McGovern was the founder and CEO of CareeerBuilder.com, but that information could not be verified. A Web search, however, showed a Robert J. McGovern left CareerBuilder in 2002 and founded Jobfox.com. A search of phone records located only one Maryland resident named Robert J. McGovern.

McGovern had earlier landed at Indianapolis Executive Airport in a private plane, and was driving an airport courtesy car, Deputy Sam Scott said in a preliminary report.

Scott said McGovern's maroon Chevrolet Lumina was hit on the driver's side by a gold Chevrolet Trailblazer driven by Jacob M. Kublnick, 17, Indianapolis.

Kublnick was passing another southbound vehicle without enough room to avoid northbound traffic, Scott said.

McGovern swerved off the road attempting to avoid the crash, Scott said. The impact pinned McGovern in the sedan. He was extricated by Zionsville Fire Department.

Scott told reporters McGovern was unresponsive when emergency workers arrived at the crash, directly in front of Interactive Academy.

Kublnick complained of neck pain and was checked at the scene by medics. A passenger, David Boyer, 15, was injured when the Blazer's airbag deployed; he was taken to St. Vincent Hospital, Indianapolis.

Zionsville Police assisted at the scene.

Two persons were injured in a single-car wreck at 6:35 p.m. Friday on U.S. 52 at CR 800 N, police said.

Maria R. Wathen, 47, lost control of her northbound 2000 Ford Explorer when the left-side wheels went off the road. The SUV rolled once, landing on its side in the roadway and rupturing the fuel tank, said Deputy Jesse C. Boggs.

Wathen was taken to Methodist Hospital for treatment of a shoulder injury. Her daughter, Claudia Orozco, 21, was treated at the scene for a cut on the leg. A two-year-old child who was secured in a car seat was uninjured.

Thorntown/Sugar Creek Fire Department responded with the sheriff's office.
