Local courts without interpreter: El Paso County helping when it can.

Jun 21, 2009 (The Pueblo Chieftain - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Changes in policy from the state court administrator have left Pueblo's combined courts without a full-time interpreter.

"It's happening statewide, not just here," said Chief District Judge Dennis Maes.

He wouldn't comment specifically on the interpreter, citing personnel issues. But he said the district is currently working with the managing court interpreter's office in El Paso County to staff cases in Pueblo.

Maes also said the Pueblo court is contracting with court interpreters here.

The court is required to provide interpretation services for felony, misdemeanor and misdemeanor traffic cases. The court is also required to provide interpretation for hearings on juvenile delinquency, protection orders in domestic violence cases, paternity, dependency and neglect cases and mental-health cases.

Maes said there is a possibility that a managing interpreters office will open in Pueblo, but that office may have a supervisory role over other counties in Southern Colorado.

According to a directive from the Office of the Chief Justice of the Colorado Supreme Court, district courts are required to use a professionally certified interpreter if there are at least five available within a 25-mile radius of the district.

If not, the courts are still required to use professionally certified interpreters for all first-degree murder cases involving language barriers.
