China Mobile Brews Cloud Computing Platform

BEIJING, Jun 01, 2009 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Mobile, one of the Big Three integrated telecom operators in the country, is preparing to launch a cloud computing platform to capitalize on an upcoming cloud computing boom in the telecom industry.

The telecom operator said lately that it was developing a cloud computing platform BigCloud in a bid to step up its mobile Internet service to come up with the diversifying demand in the 3G era.

As a specialist in the mobile information sector, China Mobile expects to grow into a featured information service provider by rolling out the new platform, said Bill Huang, head of China Mobile Communications Research Institute, noting that the company is using cloud computing services itself.

In its new platform, China Mobile adopted some applications and high-efficiency cloud computing management software like parallel algorithms for data mining, cloud storage, large capacity database, as well as search engine, according to Mr. Huang.

China Mobile turns the nascent BigCloud into a mobile Internet massive data storage and processing trail platform by applying advanced cloud computing technologies such as HyperDFS, MapReduce, HugeTable, and CloudMaster.

China Mobile has set a goal to provide featured mobile Internet information service for individual users and corporate users, added the executive.

The company, via its BigCloud platform, will supply various mobile Internet services like instant information, content storage, information search, integrated communication, music downloading, mobile map, mobile mailbox, as well as mobile directions.

Looking ahead, the telecom giant will pay equal attention to the cloud computing segment and the wireless network business in its future expansion, said Mr. Huang.

Such a move, according to market observers, is part of the Chinese telecom operator's efforts to take opportunities in the wake of a cloud computing prosperity.

In fact, a group of international telecom operators such as AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) and BT Group plc (NYSE: BT) have been providing cloud computing services. US-based Verizon Communications Inc. (NYSE: VZ) announced earlier that it would step into the cloud computing arena in the first half of 2009.

China Mobile is authorized to provide telecom service based on the country's homebrewed TD-SCDMA technologies in a long-anticipated telecom reshuffle.

The three surviving telecom operators in the country, including China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom, are expected to input as much as CNY 400 billion in their 3G business expansion in the following three years.
