UZBEKISTAN REDUCES GAS SUPPLIES TO TAJIKISTAN OVER DEBT

TASHKENT, Apr 03, 2009 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- Uzbekistan has reduced natural gas supplies to Tajikistan over outstanding debts, the Tojiktransgaz open joint-stock company has told Avesta.

Currently, 16,000 cubic meters of natural gas is being imported from Uzbekistan per hour, the source said.

"The figure before the reduction of natural gas supplies by the Uzbek side was 25,000 cubic meters per hour," the source said, and added that the reason behind cutting gas supplies was Tojiktransgaz's US$16 million debt to the Uzbek company Uztransgaz.

According to the source, huge debts of domestic consumers made it impossible to pay in a timely manner for gas supplied by the Uzbek side.

"Due to the reduction of gas imports, Tojiktransgaz suspended gas supplies to people and gas filling stations except two filling stations in Dushanbe," the source said.
