Zambia calls for drug free sports

LUSAKA, Mar 02, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Zambia's Minister for Sport, Youth and Child Development, Kenneth Chipungu Monday said that government is firmly committed to seeing a drug free sporting fraternity through the observance and implementation of all international and regional anti-doping instruments.

Chipungu reiterated that Zambia shall not lag behind in any effort to realize the global vision of drug free sports, according to Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS).

He made the remarks when he officially opened the Zone 6 Regional Anti Doping Organization (RADO) today.

The Minister said that the spirit of sport is the celebration of human body, spirit, and mind that is characterized by fair play, honesty, respect for all and compliance with rules and laws.

Chipungu observed that anti-doping programs seek to preserve the spirit of sport by getting rid of the scourge of doping within sport organizations and among authorities.

He said it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that sport is protected from the danger of doping that he said deeply undermines the morals of honesty and fair play, which is the essence of the enjoyment of sport.

The Minister said the World Anti Doping Code that was developed in 2003 to harmonize anti-doping regulations across all sports in all countries and regions has facilitated the effective fight against doping in sport.

"I wish to urge all countries represented here today to adhere to the same principles. Athletes need to participate in competitions that are safe and fair," he said.

Chipungu further observed that there is need for all experts to work closely with RADO if the regional anti-doping agency was to effectively fulfill its mission. He called on all countries and regions to provide required financial resources for specialized equipment and training in anti-doping programs, ZANIS said.

He disclosed that government is considering providing resources to train agents and to establish a national anti-doping organization this year.
