UTV, Moser Baer signs pact for home video distribution

UTV Motion Pictures and Moser Baer Entertainment have signed an exclusive home video licensing agreement formalising a strategic alliance into the home video distribution business.

Addressing a press conference here, UTV Motion Pictures CEO Sidharth Roy Kapur and Moser Baer CEO Harish Dayani said the alliance was an attempt to build on each other's strengths. "Instead of competing, need of the hour is to collaborate," they said.

The agreement gives Moser Baer video rights to 25 UTV films which includes nine under production films like "Delhi 6", "Main aur Mrs Khanna", "Kaminey", "Yahoo!" and others.

Moser Baer plans to release six recently released premium films in the next two months including A Wednesday, 'Mumbai Meri Jaan, Welcome to Sajjanpur, 'Fashion, Kismet Konnection and Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye.

The accquisition includes ten of UTV's premium catalogue films like Race, Swades, Khosla ka Ghosla, Life in a Metro, Aamir and others.

Dayani said that footfalls in theatres have come down because people have alternate options of pirated copy of the film at home within 24 hours.

He said that home video business was not a threat to theatres. In the United States, DVD revenue is double of that of theatres and both segments are growing.

Moser Baer has launched "super DVD" which comprises of more than one film on a single DVD.
"We cannot stop pirates immediately from bringing out DVDs illegally and eating into the industry's revenues. We don't want to question the consumers judgement and give them what they want," he said.
