RI, AUSTRALIA COORDINATE VOLUNTARY ACTIVITIES

Jakarta, Dec 05, 2008 (Asia Pulse Data Source via COMTEX) --
Australia and Indonesia should combine forces in cooperation with voluntary organizations in the world to improve coordination in implementing voluntary activities in Indonesia.

"It must be done as a form of appreciation to millions of people spending their time as volunteers," Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer said in a written statement made available to Antara here on Friday.

Since 1999, more than 300 Australian volunteers worked in Indonesia to strengthen relations between the two countries. The Australian government was very proud of their work as marked with the awarding of appreciation for their achievements on International Voluntary Day, Farmer said.

According to him, actually voluntary workers had contributed to the development and progress of the cooperation and mutual understanding between the two countries.

To commemorate International Voluntary Day, the government and a number of international and domestic donors established a voluntary round table for improving coordination for future voluntary activities in Indonesia.

Australian voluntary programs are an active contributor to the Australian development program in Indonesia for which this year Australia had made a commitment to provide Rp27.6 trillion.

As part of international voluntary day commemoration, the governments of Australia and Indonesia along with voluntary organizations including the United Nations volunteers, British Council, Voluntary Service Overseas and Caring Community also displayed their voluntary activities in Indonesia through afternoon activities in the Menteng park.

The activity also covered the launching of a "clean up Jakarta" activity by Caring Community, voluntary photo exhibition, an interactive sports show, recycling activity and music show.
