How a quick snooze can help save the planet

Nov 04, 2008 (The Sydney Morning Herald - ABIX via COMTEX) --
Australian consumers aiming to be environmentally conscious are advised to consider their use of computers. University of New South Wales Environment Unit manager Paul Osmond says energy consumption can be reduced significantly if a screen is set to go blank rather than show a screen saver, and if the time of inactivity before this is triggered has been reduced. Laptops are also more energy efficient than desktop computers. Another issue is the recycling of the devices, which often use harmful chemicals and heavy metals. Greenpeace has issued a ranking of computer manufacturers in terms of their recycling programs.
