Govt approves plan for US$40mn NAP tech center

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Dominican Republic President Leonel Fernndez has issued an executive order for the creation of a US$40mn technology center in capital Santo Domingo, online paper Diario Digital RD reported.

The measure would create a network access point to be called NAP del Caribe, incorporating advanced technology and fiber optics. The local telecoms regulator Indotel will administrate the project.

All the island's public institutions will interconnect with each other via the NAP de Caribe. The center will be built at the Parque Ciberntico technology park in Santo Domingo, under the supervision of US NAP operator Terremark Worldwide (Amex: TWW), according to the report.

"The Dominican Republic was chosen because the president showed great interest, and also for latency purposes, to be able to connect more rapidly, making it more efficient," Terremark Worldwide spokesperson Sandra Gonzlez-Levy told BNamericas. Terremark expects the center to be ready by 2008, she added.

Gonzlez-Levy could not comment on the financing options for this project and DR government officials were unavailable.

The decree specifies that NAP del Caribe is to be operated in rotation by both locals and foreigners. The initial contract will last five years with possible additional periods of one year each, the report said.
