UCF gets $4.5 million grant to aid laser research, industry

(Orlando Sentinel, The (FL) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Nov. 17--The University of Central Florida was granted $4.5 million Thursday for a laser-research center that proponents hope will position Florida on the cutting edge of laser technologies and industries.

"It's quite significant," said M.J. Soileau, UCF vice president for research.

UCF's Florida Photonics Center of Excellence Laser Technology Initiative is one of six research centers approved for funding this week by the state Board of Governors, which oversees Florida's public universities.

The Florida Legislature set aside $30 million this year to create and expand centers of excellence to help make the state a leader in emerging technologies and spur diversified economic growth.

UCF's center will focus on lasers for medical, military and manufacturing purposes. The university provost could supplement the centers-of-excellence money with another $500,000.

In 2003, UCF used a $10 million state grant to establish a center of excellence in photonics.

The Board of Governors also approved funding for centers in biomolecular identification and targeted therapies at the University of South Florida; ocean-energy technology at Florida Atlantic University; advanced materials at Florida State; and nano-bio sensors and sustainable energy, both at the University of Florida.
