Couple are conned in laptop sale

(Leicester Mercury Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) A couple have been conned out of hundreds of pounds at a car-boot sale in Mountsorrel.

The victims visited the sale in Granite Way on July 9, when they were approached by three men selling laptops at knockdown prices.

The men would only accept cash and agreed with the couple that they would drive to a cash machine in Birstall to get the money. The couple, who were unavailable to comment, were shown a laptop. After a short argument about the price, they agreed to buy.

The couple were handed a black canvas laptop holdall, but as they were driving home, they opened the holdall and found they had paid hundreds of pounds for two catalogues and some cardboard.

Police cannot say how much the pair paid in the con.

The three offenders were all white and aged from 25 to 30.

They drove a red Rover which may have a registration number ending in HOM.

Pc Keith James, of Syston police station, said: "Obviously, the victims have been left extremely shocked by the incident. They put their trust in these people and believed they were purchasing the items in good faith.

"I would urge people to never purchase items unless they have thoroughly checked the goods they are about to receive and to not hand over money until they are happy with the goods." Anyone with information can call police on 0116 222 2222.
