Computer gamers plan all-nighter: Party will be the first of its kind here

(Messenger-Inquirer (Owensboro, KY) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jun. 12--Mashing buttons all night.

Guzzling energy drinks to stay awake.

Filling a dark room with the glow of computer screens alive with video games.

It sounds like the perfect way to spend a day and a half to Jeff Meisenhelder, who plans to bring together about four dozen gamers for RageLAN I on July 29-30 at the Executive Inn Rivermont.

"It's just fun," he said. "You find a lot of friendly people there. ... It's a way to unwind, but there's also competitiveness."

The all-night PC video game event will be the first of its kind here, said Meisenhelder, a staff member for Owensboro-based RageLAN.com. Participants will compete against each other in first-person shooters and other types of games by connecting their computers to a LAN, or local area network, in the Texas Room at the Executive Inn.

Attendees will also vote on which games to play for one-on-one and team tournaments.

Meisenhelder -- his handle is "poptater" for video games -- and his friends Mike Nix and Matthew Thomas, both of Utica, decided to organize the LAN party after a slew of trips to Evansville and Louisville for such events.

"We love to have these parties," he said. "We love to go to them, and we figured, 'Hey, we've got enough experience. Why not try one ourselves?' "

Meisenhelder has been to 13 AsylumLAN parties near Evansville.

The Owensboro events, "a third party in the rotation, if you will," will happen about every six months and may grow into quarterly competitions, Meisenhelder said.

The Evansville parties can draw up to 200 people, he said. He would like the Owensboro parties to eventually draw about 100.

The energy drink BAWLS and video card manufacturer ATI have already signed on as sponsors for the upcoming event, and the RageLAN crew is talking to computer brand AlienWare and computer carrying case company CaseAce.

The event needs about 40 participants to be successful and can hold up to 50, Meisenhelder said. The RageLAN Web site already shows several people registered. The group will take reservations until all seats are taken, he said.

E-mail updates will be sent to subscribers of the RageLAN Web site mailing list, Meisenhelder said.

The site gives a rundown of what to bring, including a computer with an ethernet card installed, 25 feet of network patch cable, a power strip, headphones and game CDs.

What not to bring?

Tanning beds. Those use too much electricity, according to the site.
