CEA Reminds Consumers to Prepare for Hurricane Season with Certified Public Alert Devices; Not All Weather Radios Created Equally, Says CEA

ARLINGTON, Va. --(Business Wire)-- June 1, 2006 -- As citizens across the country prepare for the 2006 hurricane season, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA(R)) is reminding consumers that certified Public Alert devices are the best way to stay informed about potential weather and emergency issues as they arise. Unlike similar products on the market, devices that feature the registered Public Alert logo meet standards and requirements developed by CEA in partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

"It can be an overwhelming experience to try and compare and contrast features among the great number of weather radios on the market, especially when the safety of your family is at stake," says CEA President and CEO Gary Shapiro. "The Public Alert certification program and logo was designed to make it easier for consumers to choose the device that will offer the best and most timely information in the event of an emergency."

The enhanced feature set included in Public Alert-certified devices can make sure that citizens are prepared for the upcoming hurricane season. Those features include:

-- Commercial-free, on demand, local and national alert information 24 hours a day, triggered by warnings received directly from government sources.

-- Specific alerts for specific geographic regions, while also monitoring emergency conditions at the state and national levels.

-- Messages automatically activate the device and prompt some kind of immediate life-saving warning, even when the device is in stand-by mode.

-- Alerts when a household is asleep.

-- A variety of alert options, including lights, text messages, voice information and sirens.

-- Various alarms particularly important for individuals with disabilities.

-- In addition to tornado, hurricane, flash flood and other weather-related warnings, Public Alert devices include government broadcasts regarding many other hazards, such as Amber Alerts, chemical spills, forest fires, boil water alerts and terrorist alerts.

"Currently, IDT/Oregon Scientific, Midland, RadioShack, Reecom Electronics, Sima and Viatek are licensed to market products with the Public Alert logo," noted Shapiro. "However, those companies offer a wide range of products, so CEA urges consumers to look for the Public Alert logo to ensure that the device meets the criteria established by CEA and NOAA."
