'Crash' wins best picture, Ang Lee 1st Asian to win director's Oscar+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)LOS ANGELS, March 5_(Kyodo) _ "Crash," a story highlighting racial issues in the contemporary United States directed by Paul Haggis, won the best picture Oscar in the 78th Annual Academy Awards on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Taiwan-born Ang Lee became the first Asian to win the Academy Award for best director with "Brokeback Mountain," a film about a romance between two cowboys.

The Oscar for best leading actor went to Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote" while that for best leading actress went to Reese Witherspoon in "Walk the Line."

George Clooney was named best actor in a supporting role for his part in "Syriana" and Rachel Weisz won best actress in a supporting role in "The Constant Gardener."

"Memoirs of a Geisha," a story depicting a Japanese woman who becomes a top geisha, was awarded achievements in art direction, cinematography, and costume design. Renowned Japanese actors Ken Watanabe and Koji Yakusho also starred in the movie.

Japan was expecting the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film to go to "Howl's Moving Castle" directed by celebrated Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki, but the prize was awarded to popular clay animation "Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit."

"The Mushroom Club," highlighting atomic bomb survivors in Hiroshima, was nominated in the category for short documentaries, but failed to take the award.
