Aspera's High-Speed File Transfer Software Transforms the Digital Workflow in the Production of King Kong

BERKELEY, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- March 2, 2006 -- Aspera, Inc., the next generation leader in bulk data transfer, today announced that Weta Digital Ltd. selected Aspera's high-speed file transfer software to power the digital media transfers with NBC Universal in the making of King Kong (2006 Oscar nominee for Best Visual Effects).

Weta Digital deployed Aspera Enterprise Servers to securely exchange high-resolution trailers and promotional clips between New Zealand and Universal Studios in Los Angeles. Big Primate Pictures, the production company for King Kong, utilized Aspera's point-to-point client, Aspera Scp. Although each organization deployed on a different operating system -- Linux, Mac OS X, and Windows -- the Aspera transfers were seamless.

"We needed a fast and reliable file transfer solution allowing bi-directional transfer of high-resolution content between our offices in New Zealand and Universal Studios in Los Angeles, and Aspera's product delivered on its claims," says Weta's digital operations manager Adam Shand. "Our Aspera Enterprise Linux Server typically ran two concurrent transfers, using adaptive rate transfer policy with a minimum rate setting of 20 Mbps on each transfer. We were able to fully utilize our bandwidth while protecting other critical applications using the same link. We ran Aspera transfers twelve or more hours each day, transferring an average of 20 gigabytes per day, and achieved a speed improvement of about 20 times over FTP. The fact that the Aspera products are interoperable across Mac, Windows, and Linux, and are cost-effective software-only applications, was an added plus."

Weta Digital transferred simultaneously with both NBC Universal and Big Primate, using Aspera's management tools to adjust delivery priorities in real-time, monitor ongoing transfers, and log all transactions to a common database for audit and billing reports.

Aspera President Michelle Munson said, "Our Hollywood studio and post-production customers require secure file transfer solutions that can deliver at arbitrarily high speeds on commodity hardware, fully utilize available bandwidth, and guarantee finishing on time, no matter what. In addition, their multi-platform workflows demand interoperable file transfers with equal high performance, regardless of operating system, and end-to-end audit quality reporting. The King Kong workflow took full advantage of what Aspera's FASP transport has to offer."
