The Indiana University School of Informatics and Computing recently announced that Interactive Intelligence founder and IU alum, Don Brown, has given the school a gift of $50,000 to be used to support a fellowship in bioinformatics.

Fuxiao Xin, a bioinformatics Ph.D. student will be the initial recipient of the fellowship. Xin’s research looks at the involvement of microRNA in breast cancer anti-estrogen resistance. Her research also covers the computational prediction of functional residues in protein structures along with their involvement in human inherited and somatic disease.

Brown, the founder, chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer of Interactive Intelligence, has over 20 years of experience in the enterprise software industry and is a well-known technology innovator and entrepreneurial expert. Computer Telephony Magazine honored him as its 1997 Star of the Industry and he was also awarded Ernst and Young's Indiana Heartland 2000 Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2006, Brown was the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from Customer Interaction Solutions magazine and was also named a "Top Voice of IP Communications" by Internet Telephony magazine. Forbes magazine ranked Brown among its 10 Self-Made Small-Company Stars in 2010.

In a release, Bobby Schnabel, dean of the school, said, "The School of Informatics and Computing is very grateful for Don's generosity. His gift will go a long way to further Fuxiao Xin's research, the findings of which could make an enormous impact on the health and wellness of many women.
