Ebola Hotline Call Center Inaugurated in California

October 28, 2014

The Ebola outbreak in West Africa has a high mortality rate, with close to 70 percent of patients dying of the disease. This outbreak and the handful of cases that have appeared in North America and Europe have raised concerns about how infectious the disease is and how to recognize its symptoms.

U.S. health officials recently have urged hospitals to "think Ebola" and launched a review of procedures for treating infected patients, while the World Health Organization called the outbreak "the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times."

In order to answer to the public inquiries related to Ebola, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has begun a new Ebola hotline call center, which will respond to injuries related to Ebola. The hotline number — 855-421-5921 — will be available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Dr. Ron Chapman, CDPH director and state health officer said that the new hotline has been set up and staffed to answer questions from those concerned about the possibility of Ebola in California and the main goal is to be available to eliminate the mystery of this disease and offer the facts to Californians as the situation evolves. “This is one in a series of steps we have taken in the last few months,” Ron Chapman added.

Since the outbreak of the Ebola, CDPH has taken initiative to work with state, federal and local health officials to recognize the possible cases of Ebola in California.

In addition to this, CDPH has inaugurated the informational website, which gives information about the epidemic and preparing California health care providers with direction and procedures from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Also, CDPH is continuously involved in providing weekly updates to local health officials, first responders and health care providers to enable them to be prepared for a possible Ebola case in California.
