Vitesse Announces Ethernet IP Cores

Vitesse Semiconductor Corporation (VTSS) announced Gigabit Ethernet intellectual property (IP) cores for integrating switches into multiple electronic applications, Vitesse said in a recent statement.
Ethernet is the most used networking technology in the world, allowing massive amounts of data to be carried over a single cable. According to Cisco’s Visual Networking Index, a forecast and analysis of Internet networks, demand for video will increase. Sixty-two percent of consumer Internet traffic will be video by 2015, Cisco (News - Alert) predicts, along with accounting for two thirds of the world’s mobile data traffic before 2018.
With these predictions in mind, Vitesse’s new IP cores allow consumer and professional audio/video users to engage Ethernet networks to transport and deliver the large audio/video files directly to “performance-sensitive applications.”
IEEE’s (News - Alert) 802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet standard is also available for use in lower-power networks.
“Ubiquitous Ethernet connectivity is becoming a reality, from multi-player gaming and on-demand vide on in home entertainment consoles, to smart grid and industrial applications,” said Brian Jaroszewski, senior product marketing manager at Vitesse. “Broadening Vitesse’s IP core portfolio strategically aligns with our goal to grow licensing opportunities and expand our footprint into high-volume, adjacent markets.”
Two versions of the Ethernet core are available: VSC9953-01, a 13 Gbps GE Switch IP and VSC9954-01, a 13 Gbps GE Switch IP with Audio Video Bridging support and the IEEE 802.1AS-2011 timing and synchronization protocol. The switch core IPs has content-aware TCAM-based classifications for fine-grained traffic differentiation for packet prioritization and security.
Applications that need a steady stream of incoming data can utilize the IEE 802.1Qbb priority flow control.
