Sitel Plans to Double Workforce of its Erwin Call Center


Sitel Corporation (NYSE:SWW) recently announced that it plans to more than double the workforce of its call center in Erwin by hiring over 300 workers. The Erwin call center operates 24 hours a day and the need for employees is immediate.

Opportunities are permanent and full-time, but there are also seasonal works available. The company stated that it offers good starting salaries, benefits and bonuses.

Sitel also has the need for managers, supervisors and other types of employees in addition to customer service representatives.

Sitel is a global leader in outsourced customer care services, and has over 25 years of industry experience. The company is privately held and the majority of the shares are owned by Canadian diversified company, Onex Corporation (TSX:OCX). Sitel has over 55,000 employees in over 25 countries.

The organization opened its customer care center in Erwin during 2008, after the Empire State Development (ESD) granted Sitel with $1.5 million plus $750,000 from the Governor’s Office for Small Cities.

Sitel has just as well been included in the Global Outsourcing 100 list, a ranking that recognizes world’s best outsourcing service providers and advisors, for the sixth straight year. It has also twice been ranked as the top overall call center outsourcing provider in Datamonitor's annual Black Book of Outsourcing survey.

Call center services are a mainstay in the outsourcing industry, so it’s hardly surprising that when broadcasting network NBC released the pilot for “Outsourced,” the show that it terms “at once reverent and irreverent,” it featured the call center setting with the premise that the U.S. order-taking call center was moved to India.

Jack Farnsworth, site director of the Erwin facility, said his site is growing significantly due to the existing customer base asking for additional services, as well as because of new clients. Some new employees will provide customer service by phone.

Others will engage in live Internet chats to help customers make purchases off the websites of Sitel’s clients.

Farnsworth, however, did not name the Erwin facility’s clients, but said one is in telecommunications, another in print media and the other is the world’s largest retailer.

Farnsworth said that Sitel is a “24/7” operation so there are a range of work schedules that adds appeal to those looking for a second job. He went on to add that a small percentage of the jobs are seasonal, for November and December only, and the company is also looking to expand its management team.

One thing the outsourcing industry has been able to prove, though, is that it is a resilient business. Many outsourcing companies are opening and expanding, especially in the call center space.

Hiring will be under way through the end of the year. Applicants can apply online, by phone or in person.
