Heroku Acquired by Salesforce.com

January 05, 2011

The acquisition of Heroku has been completed by Salesforce.com. A privately held cloud platform for writing Ruby-based applications, Heroku powers over 110,000 next-generation social and mobile cloud applications. As per the announcement made by Salesforce.com, Java and Ruby—the major Cloud 2 languages—will be now supported by the Salesforce.com cloud platform.

IDC has projected the public cloud services market to reach $55.5 billion in 2014. A greater share of the public cloud services market can therefore be taken by the company.

Built from the ground up to work in an open environment, Heroku is a top Ruby platform-as-a-service, which also takes advantage of the Ruby language—used to write social and collaborative Cloud 2 apps.

Real-time access to information across mobile devices is also delivered by these Cloud 2 apps. Written by an avid following of Ruby developers, more than 110,000 apps are powered by Heroku.

In a release, Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of Salesforce.com said, "Heroku is the leading Ruby application platform and Ruby is the language of the future, driving the next generation of cloud applications that are real-time, social and mobile. With Heroku, our platform can become the cornerstone of the next-generation of cloud computing."

Salesforce.com anticipates that with a critical mass of developers, customers and ISVs wanting an open, scalable and trusted Cloud 2 platform will be attracted and served by the acquisition. A common vision of providing an open and portable programming environment is shared by both Heroku and Salesforce.com. The companies said the expense or maintenance headaches that come with buying and deploying hardware and software will no longer be borne by customers.

The same multi-tenant philosophy that is the hallmark of Salesforce.com's Force.com platform has also been used to build Heroku. The company said that apart from gaining a highly talented team and access to the rapidly expanding community of Ruby developers, Salesforce.com also gets the technology and intellectual property assets that don't exist anywhere else.

In a release, Byron Sebastian, CEO of Heroku said, "Cloud app platforms are redefining how applications are built and run—with an order of magnitude improvement in developer productivity and business agility. We're excited about accelerating Heroku's—and Ruby's—momentum in leading this industry transformation."
